Why are difficult conversations difficult?
Well, difficult conversations often have high contextual stakes for the people involved: they might be manifestations of grievances in a relationship, or express work-related concerns, etc. Secondly, difficult conversations are actually composed of three types of conversations happening at the same time (the “what happened?” conversation, the “how does this make each of us feel?” conversation, and the “what does this conflict tell us about who we are and can be as people?” conversation). These three types must be identified, even if very informally, in order for the conversation to ultimately achieve its goal.
