Anthony Medeiros
Biography
Anthony Medeiros serves as the Director of the Community Dialogue Project (CDP) at Brown University, where he designs and leads experiential learning programs that help emerging leaders build the skills to communicate effectively, engage in dialogue, and resolve conflict. Since joining Brown in 2025, Anthony has led the relaunch and expansion of CDP. Drawing on a deep background in peacebuilding and democratic pluralism, Anthony trains and develops a cohort of student facilitators to lead authentic dialogue across difference.
Anthony is an experienced public sector and higher education administrator, mediator, and leader of high-impact dialogue and civic engagement initiatives. Previously, Anthony served as a United States diplomat and USAID Foreign Service Officer, managing democracy, human rights, and peace programs. He most recently served as Deputy Director of Democracy, Governance, and Peace at the U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. His earlier postings included Uganda, Senegal, and Washington.
He brings 15+ years of global experience leading teams and overseeing project portfolios to strengthen pluralism and human rights. He has managed partnerships and grants with leading dialogue and democracy organizations including the Carter Center, IFES, NDI, IRI, and local religious and civil society organizations. Highlights of his past work include launching youth civic leadership programs in Uganda, supporting interfaith electoral observation in DRC, and standing up technical assistance to the constitutional dialogue and electoral reform in post-coup Gabon. He has also conducted conflict and human rights research in Nigeria, India, and Malaysia, and co-authored USAID's handbook for consultation with indigenous peoples to uphold free, prior, and informed consent.
Anthony is a certified mediator and dialogue facilitator and holds a master's in city planning from MIT, where he focused on political, land-based, and intergroup conflict. At Brown, Anthony draws on these diverse experiences to prepare students to serve as engaged, facilitative leaders in their careers and communities.
